Eligibility for PR After Studying in Australia
To be eligible for permanent residency (PR) there are many factors that come into play before we can work on your answer: your current course, where you study, your age, and your professional experience which will need to be assessed.
Not everyone is qualified to provide accurate advice on this complex issue, you’ll need to consult with a Registered Migration Agent (RMA).
Why is RMA needed in getting permanent residency status?
Why registered migration agents? The eligibility criteria (including SOL) is changing overtime and you have to understand that everyone is unique, everyone has different circumstances.
And we understand that.
A registered migration agent (RMA) will help to figure out your current condition and what steps you need to take from today so you can achieve your dream of becoming a permanent resident in Australia.

Step By Step on How to Get PR After Study in Australia
You generally will need to meet this criteria below.
Completion of a recognised qualification
You must have completed a CRICOS-registered course at an Australian institution. You may also want to ask question below:
What, where, and when you study will affect your eligibility.
- What? – what course did you study? Is your course aligned with the skilled occupation list (SOL) currently needed by Australia? What is your level of study? Is it Certificate, Diploma, or Higher Education?
- Where? – where did you study? Is it in metropolitan or regional areas? Will you be eligible for additional points?
- When? – when did you graduate? When you graduate, is your current course still in the skilled occupation list (SOL)?
SOL is a list of occupations that are in high demand in Australia and may be eligible for skilled migration.
Increase your PR chances by choosing a course that is included in the future SOL.
Check your personal background
With your current age will you be eligible to get another visa to connect you with your goal of permanent residency?
Age will determine many factors, as you know the new streamlined pathway from student visa to permanent residency will be age-sensitive.
You can only get a graduate visa when you are no older than 35 years old (yes for some special conditions, age 50), and you can get a working visa at max 45 years old (our recruitment partner suggests that candidates 39 years old or younger may have a slight advantage in the application process.
Be eligible for temporary graduate visa
Next, you have the opportunity to work, live and live longer in Australia after graduation for up to 5 years with a post-study work visa called the Temporary Graduate Visa.
The duration will depend on your qualification.
TGV allows you to use your new qualifications in Australia, so you not only have a degree, but you also have work experience that you need.
Australia provides Temporary Graduate Visas to students after graduation which encourages them to seek employment and increases their eligibility for permanent residency.
Get enough working experience
Full-time work experience acquired both prior to and between your degree can contribute positively to your Australian PR prospects.
The Department of Home Affairs considers relevant work experience as a valuable factor in assessing skilled migration applications.
This experience should align with the nominated occupation and be substantiated through proper documentation.
The combination of academic qualifications and work experience enhances your overall eligibility for skilled visas, such as the General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas which provides a comprehensive profile that strengthens your application for immigration to Australia.
Take Professional Year Programme (PYP)
The Professional Year Programme (PYP) is a 44-week study that combines coursework and a full-time internship to enhance employability and excel in your chosen field.
It will also give you extra points for your further skilled visa’s application.
By completing an internship related to your field of studies, you will:
- Enhance your employment opportunities.
- Improve your understanding in application of theoretical knowledge to a ‘real work experience’.
- Increased soft skills such as confidence, communication, team-building and leadership skills.
- Understand and learn how to operate in diverse workplace cultures.
Be eligible for skilled migration (SkillSelect)
After you go through everything above, you should have already collected enough points to apply for your dream.
SkillSelect as the leading platform for skilled migration in Australia works by sorting candidates who have submitted their EOI and providing visa invitations if selected.
Points will calculated using:
- Age
- Work experience and skills.
- Educational qualifications.
- English language proficiency.
The minimum score required for a visa invitation can change over time but today it stands at 65.
Even if later you have exceeded more points, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get your seat.
