What does international student health insurance mean?
If you are an international student in Australia, you will need Overseas Student Health Insurance (OSHC) as a condition of applying for a Student Visa for the duration of your stay. This coverage will help you access medical services, medical care, hospitals, and more when you need it, whether it’s a medical emergency or no medical emergency.
Why do I need health insurance to get an Australian visa?
Australia has one of the highest health standards in the world. And to maintain these standards, immigrants visiting, studying, or working in Australia must meet the minimum health requirements to obtain a visa.
How do I qualify for OSHC?
If you are an overseas student then you are eligible for OSHC. To become an overseas student, you must be:
- a student visa holder, or
- someone who:
- are a student visa applicant,
- and
are a bridging visa holder, and - Was a student visa holder before being granted a bridging visa.
- Your dependents, i.e. spouse, de-facto partner, children, may and should be covered by OSHC (including multifamily and dual family policies, from 1 January 2012).
- If the person is no longer dependent on a Student Visa (Subclass 500) holder, he or she will need to seek other health insurance options.
How long do I need OSHC?
As long as you hold a student visa, you will need to obtain an OSHC during the visa period. Generally, you need to have a valid OSHC starting from a fortnight before your study starts until two – three months after your study ends, depending on the dates of your studies.
This is according to the visa requirements which came into effect on July 1, 2010. If your visa proposal is extended, you will have to renew your health insurance
How long does it take to receive the policy certificate?
As soon as the insurance company receives the payment, the insurance policy or documents will be emailed to you. If you pay by credit card, you can get it within a few hours. However, if you choose to extend or change the date of the current policy, it may take 24-48 business hours to obtain the renewed policy certificate.
What if I cancel my current insurance policy?
If you cancel your policy during your stay and do not purchase a new one, this will void your visa as you are required to comply with 8501 or known as OSHC conditions. This will also affect the processing of your visa applications in the future.
Can I switch OSHC providers at any time?
The Ministry of Health allowed you to switch OSHC insurance providers at any time. If you switch providers after you have already paid your initial premium, you are entitled to a refund. However, you may have to pay a refund processing fee. You also need to provide your current OSHC provider with valid evidence of the new policy you are switching to.
